Circondata dalle cime del Monte Rosa che superano i 4000 m, e lambita da imponenti ghiacciai, l’alta valle d’Ayas ha la forma di un largo anfiteatro aperto verso sud, che va a chiudersi a nord in uno stretto e boscoso vallone, sopra il paese di Champoluc. L’orientamento nord-sud della valle, percorsa dal torrente Evançon, fa sì che Ayas abbia la posizione più soleggiata di tutta la regione.
Nella conca di Ayas sono distribuiti ben 35 villaggi,tra i quali ANTAGNOD, pittoreschi e antichissimi, dalle case addossate le une alle altre e costruite nel tipico stile walser, ossia con la base in muratura e la parte superiore in tronchi che poggia su colonnine a fungo (parte in legno e parte in pietra), mentre il tetto è ricoperto di lastre d’ardesia: i cosiddetti rascard.
